'We’ve lost our sense of shame': Trump insider blasts president's grifting

A former communications director for President Donald Trump is warning that the Republican leader and his supporters are shameless about one big issue.

“Answer these questions: Are you allowed to insider trade in Congress?” Anthony Scaramucci, who worked for the president during his first term, posted on X on Thursday. “Can the president do his so-called businessman’s deals? Is any of this actually legal?”

He added, “My opinion is: It smells terrible and it should be stopped. But we’ve lost our sense of shame. Trump said 2 things: 1. It’s peanuts and not that much money. 2. Nobody cares. That second one is the one that should keep you up at night.”

Scaramucci concluded, “Hopefully people actually do care. Hopefully they show up in November and send these guys a message.”

The erstwhile GOP aide has emerged as one of the president’s fiercest critics. Last month, Scaramucci told CNN that Trump does not care about other members of his own Republican Party.

“I don't think he cares about the Republican Party,” Scaramucci told CNN’s Katy Tur. “I do a podcast with Katty Kay called The Rest Is Politics US. I say repeatedly — he doesn't care about the Republican Party. He almost doesn't want [Secretary of State Marco] Rubio or [Vice President JD] Vance to be as successful, because he really doesn't want anybody to take any credit for anything. Moreover, he wants to tell Republicans: you guys were nobodies before I arrived in 2015, and you'll be nobodies once again.”

Scaramucci also condemned his party’s most prominent Republicans, saying that Americans should “just look at the way [Trump] was talking about people like [Senate Majority Leader John] Thune, [former Senate Majority Leader Mitch] McConnell or [Alaska Sen. Lisa] Murkowski — just go through the list of people that are still some semblance of traditional Republicans.”

He concluded that Trump appears to have “focused on making money for his family and creating a lot of stir and attention. And I think that's really it.”

In May, Scaramucci accused Trump’s supporters of being loyal to him like dogs, saying that “Trump’s approach to corruption is to do everything in the open. Make it so ridiculous and so inundating that people’s heads spin and then once they’re numb, keep going.” He argued that Trump’s biggest scandals, such as his suppression of the Jeffrey Epstein files, prove that “when you ask voters what they care about, the Epstein files are at the bottom of the list. They want jobs and gas prices they can afford. Trump’s corruption isn’t even on their radar screen.”

Also in May, Scaramucci argued there is a double standard between how Trump is not held accountable and how Democrats are expected to be accountable.

“If Barack Obama had done half of what Trump is doing now, Fox News would have been calling for impeachment,” Scaramucci said at the time.

“Trump has no economic philosophy,” he added. “He spent $8.2 trillion in his first term and he's on pace for $9 to $10 trillion in this one. We're at 100 percent debt to GDP held by investors — 122 percent if you count the Fed's balance sheet. Ray Dalio will tell you those numbers put you in sovereign debt crisis territory. And when that happens, the only way politicians are willing to pay for it is through inflation. Which is the cruelest possible outcome, because inflation is the worst tax you can impose on lower and middle income people.”
