Oman has pledged OMR50 million ($130 million) to help rebuild citizens’ homes that were damaged in last month’s floods.
The National Committee for Emergency Management (NCEM) has already assessed flood damage that destroyed over 600 homes across the country, Oman Television said on Friday.
The Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA) said 14 people lost their lives and 200 were injured.
“The NCEM has completed the task of inspecting homes damaged by floods and has already proposed compensation to rebuild them as a top national priority at a cost of about 50 million rials,” Oman Television said.
The government, in cooperation with local municipalities of affected towns, evacuated more than 700 people to temporary shelters, according to the CDAA.
The flooding also destroyed a number of electrical installations, schools, roads and businesses around the country.
Last month, the ministry of commerce, industry and investment promotion estimated that insurance companies may face a bill of up to $60 million.
The heavy rains started during the Eid holidays on March 20 and continued until the end of the month.
