Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, starring Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen, spent the bulk of its budget in The Boss’ home state — a rarity in an era where most big studios film their productions outside of the U.S.
The production of the film — which largely keys in on two years of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s life and career during the early 1980s during the recording of his Nebraska album — opened in theaters on Friday.
Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere examines how Springsteen channeled childhood pain into the tracks of Nebraska, and features flashback scenes involving his father, Doug (Stephen Graham) and mother, Adele (Gaby Hoffman). The film also stars Matthew Anthony Pellicano Jr. as the young Bruce, Odessa Young as Springsteen’s early 1980s girlfriend, Faye, and Jeremy Strong as Springsteen’s manager, Jon Landau.
Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere had a production budget of $55 million, according to Variety. But in an era where many studios choose to film the bulk of their productions outside of the U.S., the 20th Century Studios production spent most of its money in the singer, songwriter and musician’s home state of New Jersey.
According to the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission, $41.8 million of the Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere budget was spent in the Garden State. Also, the NJMPTVC noted, $1.7 million was spent on extras and $552,000 was spent on lodging.
“Deliver Me from Nowhere shines a spotlight on New Jersey’s rich culture and talent, and honors Bruce Springsteen’s unmatched legacy,” NJMPTVC Executive Director Jon Crowley said in a statement. “This film showcases our varied locations and deep talent pool and is a testament to why productions keep choosing the Garden State. New Jersey, the birthplace of film, is the industry’s future.”

“There was only one place that made sense to film a movie about Bruce Springsteen – the place where it all began, right here in New Jersey,” New Jersey Economic Development Authority CEO Tim Sullivan said in a statement.
“From The Stone Pony to the Meadowlands, Springsteen’s career crisscrossed the state, eventually becoming an international sensation,” Sullivan added. “Major productions like Deliver Me from Nowhere continue to create jobs, support small businesses, and fuel our economy.
