MANILA, Philippines – Member states of the United Nations vote on Wednesday, June 3, for new non-permanent members of the powerful Security Council. The Philippines is vying for the one open seat for the Asia-Pacific Group. Kyrgyzstan, which has never sat in the UN SC, is vying for the same seat.

One seat each is up for election for the African Group and the Latin American and Caribbean Group. Two seats are up for grabs to represent the Western European and Others Group. Voting will be done through a secret ballot.

The UN SC is considered the most powerful body in the UN, tasked with upholding “international peace and security in accordance with the principles and purposes of the United Nations.” Manila first made its plans to run for the 2027-2028 term in 2013, with campaigning intensifying under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Rappler.com
