Biographer warns Trump’s latest midterm gaffe a sign he’s 'at his most dangerous'

President Donald Trump is being backed into a corner, and according to his one-time biographer, his disastrous recent midterm gaffe proves it.

Earlier this week, Trump dropped his latest callous comment about voter discontent heading into the 2026 midterms, after being pressed about factors at play in his peace negotiations with Iran during a Cabinet meeting.

"I don’t care about the midterms," Trump admitted, before claiming that the win of his endorsed candidate in a Texas primary runoff was a sign that the GOP would win. The remark, coming soon after he also claimed not to care about the financial hardships voters are facing, was seized upon by Democrats, who have been hammering Trump about his failures heading into the crucial upcoming races.

Michael Wolff, a veteran reporter and author who has written extensively about Trump's political career, reacted to this new remark in the latest episode of his Daily Beast podcast, "Inside Trump's Head," claiming that it signals the start of a dangerous new phase of his presidency.

“We’re in the ‘I don’t care’ phase of his presidency,” Wolff said. “‘I don’t care’ has to do with his anger and contempt when he’s held to account, you know? When the rules of gravity apply to him... when actions have consequences that he can’t fix. So, really, ‘I don’t care’ is saying basically, ‘f—— you.’”

Digging further into Trump's psychology, Wolff argued that the president's latest remark indicates precisely the opposite of what he said.

“Basically, he is saying that... he desperately cares and that he recognizes that his back is to the wall, that he’s in a corner that he can’t get out of,” Wolff added. “Also, we should note that when he’s in this mood, he is at his most dangerous and most audacious. So, the ‘I don’t care, I’m above it all’ guy is really down in the mud thinking of some slur or libel to save himself or some new enemy to elevate and attack, some preposterous lie to propound and spread, and some emergency to declare.

He continued: "This could be a very messy moment or an ugly Trump moment at this point — that he’s going to blame us for demanding that he care."
