Mastercard and Letshego have launched a new Mozambique debit card, targeting the country’s persistently low digital payment adoption.

The two institutions launched the card on 6 May 2026. Digital payment adoption in Mozambique remains among the lowest in the region. The Letshego Debit Card boosts access to secure transactions. It also marks Letshego’s 15-year milestone in the market.

Driving Financial Inclusion

The card leverages Mastercard‘s global network. Customers can now transact safely at home and abroad. This shift from cash aids underserved groups. It helps them build financial histories and gain entry to formal services.

Letshego, part of Letshego Africa Holdings, leads the effort. The group lists on the Botswana Stock Exchange. It operates across multiple African markets. In Mozambique, Letshego holds a banking licence and started as a micro bank in 2011. The firm focuses on individuals and small enterprises.

The World Bank’s Global Findex 2021 reported that 76% of adults worldwide held a financial account. Yet, over a billion people still lack access. Digital payments bridge this gap. The Mozambique debit card fits this trend. It supports safer money management.

Gabriel Swanepoel, Division President for Africa at Mastercard, highlighted the impact. “Expanding access to secure digital payments enables broader participation,” he said. “The Letshego Debit Card unlocks economic opportunity.”

Strengthening Mozambique’s Digital Economy

The launch aids the wider payments ecosystem. Consumers enjoy greater convenience. Merchants see more digital acceptance. This builds financial infrastructure at scale.

A senior representative of Letshego Mozambique stressed the firm’s commitment. “This reflects our innovation for local impact,” they said. “Customers move beyond cash with confidence.”

Letshego tailors solutions to local needs. It prioritises responsible banking. The card enhances financial resilience and promotes inclusive growth.

Mastercard powers payments in over 200 countries. Its networks make transactions simple. Partnerships like this drive commercial potential in frontier markets.

Investors are eyeing growth in underserved markets. Mozambique’s digital shift signals clear opportunity. Formal financial access expands the broader economy.

This positions Mozambique for meaningful digital gains. Watch adoption rates and transaction volumes — they will show the scaling potential for regional players.
