PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. on Wednesday said he will press its partners for more information and cooperation regarding the case of former lawmaker turned fugitive Elizaldy “Zaldy” S. Co who remains at large in Europe.
Following his meeting with French Ambassador to the Philippines Marie Fontanel and Czech Chargé d’affaires Eva Tenzin, Mr. Marcos conveyed his disappointment that Mr. Co, who is wanted for graft in the Philippines, was released despite what he described as Manila’s “earnest efforts” to secure his return.
“He requested for further information as to what transpired and why Zaldy Co was released from custody by the Czech authorities,” a statement from his office read.
Mr. Co, formerly the House Appropriations Committee chairman, is implicated in a multibillion-peso graft scandal in the Philippines, an accusation he denied earlier.
Despite the setback, Mr. Marcos said he remains confident that bilateral ties with both countries — anchored on shared commitments to the rule of law — will support deeper cooperation.
He expressed optimism that enhanced police, legal and judicial coordination could ultimately lead to Mr. Co’s arrest and return to the Philippines, where he is expected to face charges.
Mr. Co was earlier in Czech custody for lack of proper documentation.
However, he was released before the Philippine delegation tasked to bring him home arrived in Prague.
He is now under French jurisdiction as he seeks political asylum in the country for alleged political persecution in the Philippines. — Chloe Mari A. Hufana
