Tether taps Canaan and ACME Swisstech for modular Bitcoin mining infrastructure

Tether is expanding its Bitcoin mining infrastructure with modular, high density compute systems designed to make large scale operations more efficient, customizable, and easier to upgrade.

The digital asset company is working with Canaan and ACME Swisstech to build systems around application specific hash board modules, rather than relying on fully assembled mining rigs. The design integrates those modules into Tether’s own control architecture, thermal management systems, and software stack.

The system separates compute from power and enclosure, allowing each layer of the mining setup to be optimized independently. Tether said the approach can reduce energy overhead, improve availability, and give operators more direct control over performance under real operating conditions.

Most large scale mining operations still rely on thousands of individual machines with limited coordination across a site. Tether’s modular approach aims to replace that fixed model with systems that can be tuned, cooled, and upgraded at the component level.

The design is optimized for immersion cooling, though Tether said other cooling systems are also being developed. Operators can adjust output as needed and replace or upgrade individual components without replacing entire mining units.

ACME Swisstech President Giv Zanganeh said the collaboration with Tether and Canaan allows the companies to build systems that differ from plug and play mining products and take a more industrial design approach for large scale operations.

Canaan CEO Nangeng Zhang said demand is growing for modular, high performance hardware that can be integrated into customer designed systems. He said Canaan’s Avalon hash board module supports more flexible deployment while improving efficiency and reducing operational complexity, particularly for immersion cooled setups.

The deployment builds on Tether’s earlier work on its open source Mining OS and Mining SDK, which were designed to give operators more control over hardware, energy use, and site performance.
