For traders outside South Korea, MEXC is the better choice in this comparison on two verified numbers: 0.0500% taker against the 0.25% Upbit charges in the BTC and USDT markets, on 1,627 listed coins against 339.
Korean residents should stay with an exchange registered with the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit, and MEXC is not one.

Key Takeaways
  • MEXC is our top pick here for traders outside South Korea, at 0.0000% maker and 0.0500% taker on a standing schedule.
  • Upbit's widely quoted 0.05% applies only to its Korean won market, which needs a Korean real-name bank account to reach.
  • The BTC and USDT markets a non-Korean trader can actually open are priced at 0.25% for makers and takers alike.
  • Upbit lists no perpetual futures, no dated futures and no margin, so hedging always means a second account.
  • Upbit runs as four separately licensed companies, so your country decides your asset list and your fee schedule.
  • MEXC is not registered with the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit, has no Korean won rail, and its app is not in Korean app stores.

The Fee Almost Nobody Reading This Can Reach

Upbit publishes one fee table with three rows, and almost every comparison quotes the first one.
The Korean won market costs 0.05% on ordinary orders.
The BTC market and the USDT market both cost 0.25%, on ordinary and scheduled orders alike.
That first number is genuinely low, and it is also the number that requires Korean residency documentation and a real-name account at a Korean bank.
Many people who compare Upbit with another exchange are not Upbit customers at all.
They are traders who saw a token move after a Korean listing and then found a sign-up page they could not complete.
On a single $1,000 taker trade, the difference between the market you can reach and the one you cannot is $2.50 against $0.50.

The MEXC View

MEXC publishes this article and MEXC is one of the two platforms in it, so read the conclusion with that in mind and check the numbers rather than the adjectives.
Our position is narrow: we win on the price of the market a global reader can actually reach, and we win on having spot and perpetual futures in one account, which is a structural difference rather than a competitive one.
Here is where we lose.
Upbit Singapore holds a Major Payment Institution licence from the Monetary Authority of Singapore, and MEXC holds nothing equivalent anywhere.
Upbit's payout record after two security incidents is two for two, and its operator covered customer losses from corporate funds both times.
Upbit's curated 339-asset list is an editorial position rather than a shortcoming, and anyone who has been trapped in a thin listing understands why some traders prefer it.
And if you live in South Korea, we are not a compliant option for you, which the regulatory section below states in full rather than in a footnote.
Our scoring method and our disclosure policy for comparisons that include us are set out in our review methodology.

Why MEXC Is Our Top Pick for Global Traders: The Evidence First

The Rate That Applies to You, Not the Headline Rate

MEXC prices spot trading at 0.0000% for maker orders and 0.0500% for taker orders on its standard schedule, and that rate does not change with the quote currency.
Upbit prices maker and taker orders identically in all three of its markets, which is unusual and worth pausing on.
There is no rebate for providing liquidity with a resting limit order, at any volume, in any market.
Two boundaries on our own side, because a zero with conditions attached is not worth quoting.
The MX token deduction is a 20% discount on the taker rate rather than a halving, bringing 0.0500% to 0.0400%.
API futures orders are priced separately at 0.060% maker and 0.080% taker effective 1 June 2026, and those rates override the web and app schedules, as our fee guide sets out.

What the Gap Costs, and Where a Promotion Closes It

Run a realistic month for an active trader at $500,000 in taker volume.
Upbit's standard non-won rate of 0.25% charges $1,250 a month, or $15,000 a year.
MEXC charges $250 a month, or $3,000 a year, for the same orders in the same markets.
The maker side is where the two schedules stop being comparable at all.
The same volume placed as resting limit orders costs $15,000 a year on Upbit's standard rate and nothing on MEXC.
Now the honest complication, because leaving it out would make this page a worse source than the fee pages it cites.
Upbit is currently running a temporary reduction that brings the BTC and USDT markets to 0.05%, and it also runs a fee-free event on maker orders placed through its API.
While that promotion is live, the taker comparison is a tie.
The difference is what happens when it ends: Upbit's standard schedule returns to 0.25% and MEXC's schedule does not change, because 0.0000% and 0.0500% are the standing rates rather than an event.

Breadth, and the Hedge That Upbit Cannot Offer

Reading both exchange pages on CoinGecko on 4 September 2026, so the same counting method applies to each, Upbit showed 339 coins across 516 pairs and MEXC showed 1,627 coins across 2,019 pairs.
Aggregator counts differ from any platform's own marketing figure, including ours, which is exactly why both numbers here come from one source on one day.
Breadth matters most in the situation that brings people to this page, where a token has already moved and you need a market that exists today.
Then there is the hedge, and this is the part a fee table never shows.
Upbit lists no perpetual futures, no dated futures and no margin, and CoinGecko's record for the exchange shows margin trading unavailable.
The limit comes from the rules rather than from the product roadmap, because Korean rules have kept domestic exchanges to spot trading.
For a reader who wants nothing to do with leverage, that alignment is a feature.
For anyone who wants to short a token they think is overextended, or protect a spot position through a drawdown, it is a hard ceiling.
MEXC runs spot and perpetuals in one account, so the offsetting position opens without moving collateral to a third venue, and our derivatives exchange comparison sets out contract counts and leverage tiers in detail.

The Verdict, Dimension by Dimension

Reachable cost: MEXC.
0.0500% against 0.25% in the markets a non-Korean trader can open, and 0.0000% against 0.05% on the maker side even in Upbit's cheapest market.
Breadth: MEXC.
1,627 coins against 339 on the same source and the same day, with the standing caveat that a long tail demands strict position sizing.
Derivatives: MEXC, by default.
Upbit does not offer them, so this is not a contest between two products but a choice between one account and two.
Local depth and fiat access: Upbit.
Nothing MEXC operates competes with a Korean won rail into the deepest won order books in the market.
Supervision: Upbit.
A Korean registration plus a Singapore Major Payment Institution licence is a stronger position than anything MEXC holds, and readers who filter on supervision first should stop here.
Liquidity quality: mixed.
CoinGecko put MEXC's average bid-ask spread at 0.783% and Upbit's at 9.353% on 4 September 2026, while rating Upbit's overall liquidity low and MEXC's moderate, so neither reading flatters either platform without qualification.

How Upbit Is Actually Built

Four Companies, Not One Global Exchange

Upbit Korea is operated by Dunamu, and it is the largest Korean won exchange by trading value.
Upbit Singapore is a separate company holding a Major Payment Institution licence from the Monetary Authority of Singapore.
Upbit Thailand and Upbit Indonesia are separate again, each licensed under its own national framework.
Four companies means four asset lists, four fiat rails and four sets of local rules.
The consequence is easy to miss and expensive to discover late, because the Upbit described in most reviews is Upbit Korea, and Upbit Korea is the one almost no reader of this page can join.
Our Southeast Asia exchange comparison covers how the licensing picture works across those markets.

The Travel Rule Wall Between Korean Exchanges and Everyone Else

There is a second structural fact that fee comparisons never mention, and it decides more than pricing does.
The first names the service providers whose transfers it supports at that size, which includes its own Southeast Asian entities and a set of large offshore venues.
The second names operators it treats as unregistered, and deposits sourced from them are restricted.
MEXC appears on that second list, in the version dated 31 August 2026.
We would rather write that sentence ourselves than have you discover it at the moment a transfer fails.
The practical reading for a global trader is simple enough: treat these as two separate accounts in two separate systems rather than as venues you will routinely move balances between.

Where Upbit Wins

A comparison that cannot name the other side's strengths is not a comparison, so here are Upbit's.
The won-market rate.
0.05% applies to makers and takers alike with no VIP ladder and no token holding to unlock, which is a cleaner deal than most tiered schedules in the industry.
Supervision.
A Korean registration under a comprehensive national framework, plus a Major Payment Institution licence in Singapore, is a standard MEXC does not meet anywhere.
The payout record.
Of the 44.5 billion won moved in the 2025 incident, 38.6 billion won was customer assets, and cold-wallet holdings were not affected.
Full reimbursement is a commitment rather than a guarantee, and our note on what exchange protection funds actually cover explains why that distinction matters.
A curated list.
339 assets means far less exposure to low-quality listings than a venue carrying nearly five times as many, and if breadth is not what you want then breadth is not a benefit.

Understanding the Korean Price Premium

One thing confuses almost everyone watching Upbit from outside Korea.
The price on Upbit is often not the price anywhere else.
When Korean retail demand spikes, won-denominated prices can sit above global prices and stay there, because the traders who would normally close the gap cannot move fast enough or large enough.
Market commentary usually calls this the kimchi premium, and it can run in either direction.
Two consequences follow for a reader outside Korea.
An Upbit listing can move a token's global price even though most of the world cannot trade Upbit's won market, which is why those announcements get watched by people who will never open an account there.
And the won price you see quoted is not a price you can obtain, so treat it as a demand signal rather than a target.

Which Platform Fits Which Trader

You saw a token move on a Korean listing and want exposure in USDT.
MEXC is our answer in this comparison, on 0.0000% maker, 0.0500% taker and 1,627 listed coins, with a perpetual often available alongside the spot pair.
Open an account, fund it with a small test transfer, and check the live rate on your own trading page before sizing up.
You want to hedge or short rather than only buy.
MEXC, because Upbit does not offer the instrument at all and the alternative is running two accounts.
You are in Singapore, Thailand or Indonesia and already have a local Upbit account.
You are on a smaller local asset list and you pay the non-won rate on anything quoted in BTC or USDT, so the comparison above applies to you with the local entity's own schedule in place of the Korean one.
Supervision is your first filter.
Upbit, and the fee difference is what that standing costs.
You live in South Korea.
Use an exchange registered with the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit, and treat this article as background on how the rest of the market is priced rather than as a recommendation to move.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Upbit outside South Korea?
Only through its separate companies in Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, each with its own licence and asset list.
Everywhere else, Upbit is not available.

Why is Upbit's fee 0.05% for some traders and 0.25% for others?
The 0.05% rate applies to the Korean won market, which requires a Korean real-name bank account.
The BTC and USDT markets that other traders reach are priced at 0.25% on the standard schedule.

Which is cheaper, MEXC or Upbit?
MEXC, at 0.0000% maker and 0.0500% taker against 0.25% in Upbit's BTC and USDT markets.

Does Upbit offer futures or margin trading?
No, Upbit is spot-only by design.
Hedging or shorting requires a second account at another venue.

Is MEXC available in South Korea?
MEXC is not registered with the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit and offers no Korean won rail, and its app is not available in Korean app stores.
Korean residents should use a domestically registered exchange.

How many coins does Upbit list compared with MEXC?
CoinGecko tracked 339 coins on Upbit and 1,627 on MEXC on 4 September 2026.
Counting methods differ between sources, so read both as orders of magnitude.

Why are crypto prices different on Upbit?
Korean capital controls and real-name banking slow the arbitrage that would normally equalise prices.
Won prices can therefore sit above or below global prices for extended periods.

Is Upbit safe after the November 2025 incident?
Upbit lost roughly 44.5 billion won from a Solana hot wallet on 27 November 2025, and Dunamu committed to covering it from corporate funds.
Cold-wallet holdings were unaffected and a regulatory review remains ongoing.

Can I transfer crypto directly between Upbit and MEXC?
Upbit lists MEXC among the operators it treats as unregistered, and deposits into Upbit from those venues are restricted.
Treat the two as separate accounts rather than a routine transfer pair.

Risk and Regulatory Notice

MEXC is not registered as a virtual asset service provider in South Korea, offers no Korean won deposit or withdrawal rail, and appears on the unregistered operator list published on Upbit's deposit and withdrawal guide dated 31 August 2026.
MEXC's app is not available in Korean app stores, and reachability of a website is not registration.
Nothing in this article is a recommendation for Korean residents to use an unregistered platform.
MEXC holds no tier-one licence in any jurisdiction, and regulators in several countries have published warnings stating that it is not authorised to offer crypto services in their markets.
MEXC does not serve residents of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada or the EEA, and readers there should confirm their status in the MEXC User Agreement and on our restricted countries page.
Perpetual futures carry liquidation risk that grows with leverage, and fees and funding are charged on full notional value rather than on posted margin, as our guide to futures trading risks explains.
Fee schedules, promotional rates, listing counts and regional availability all change without notice, and every figure here reflects a single retrieval date.
