MEXC is our top pick among Coinbase alternatives in this comparison, on two measures you can check yourself: a published spot rate of 0.0000% maker and 0.0500% taker, and roughly four times as many listed coins as Coinbase Exchange.
Kraken is the better answer if you are in the United States or the United Kingdom, where MEXC does not operate.

Key takeaways
  • MEXC is our top pick in this comparison on published cost and listing breadth, at 0.0000% maker and 0.0500% taker on major pairs.
  • MEXC's User Agreement prohibits the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada, and MEXC holds no MiCA authorisation for the European Economic Area.
  • A $1,000 simple limit buy on Coinbase can cost up to $28.75 in published fees, plus a spread Coinbase does not publish anywhere.
  • Coinbase One waives the standard trading fee up to your tier cap but does not waive the 1% limit order execution fee.
  • Switching to Coinbase Advanced removes the spread entirely and costs nothing to try.
  • Coinbase leads this comparison on United States licensing, public-company disclosure and CoinGecko's Trust Score at 10 out of 10.

Why people look for a Coinbase alternative

Most people who search for a Coinbase alternative are not unhappy with the app.
They are reacting to a number they saw on an order confirmation screen.
Coinbase's own pricing disclosure explains why that number is often larger than expected.
On simple buy and sell orders, the quoted price includes a spread, and Coinbase states that the spread may vary between similar transactions and that it may keep any excess.
For simple limit orders, Coinbase charges a separate execution fee equal to 1% of the trade, and it may also charge a Coinbase fee of 1.875% that varies by payment method.
The second trigger is coin selection.
Coinbase reviews assets carefully before listing them, which is a real strength for a regulated venue and a real limitation if the token you want is not there yet.
The third trigger is account friction.
Coinbase publishes a complaints channel and a status page, and it has expanded phone support through its Coinbase One tiers.

What a $1,000 buy actually costs on Coinbase

Coinbase runs three different pricing models under one brand, and the gap between them is larger than the gap between most exchanges.
The table below uses only figures Coinbase publishes itself.
Coinbase path
Trading fee
Spread
Cost on a $1,000 simple limit buy
Simple buy or sell screen
1% limit order execution fee, plus a Coinbase fee of up to 1.875% that varies by payment method
Included in the quoted price, amount not published
Up to $28.75, plus an undisclosed spread
Coinbase One member, simple screen
Standard trading fee waived up to the tier cap, but the 1% limit order execution fee still applies
Still applies, amount not published
$10.00 plus an undisclosed spread, plus the subscription
Coinbase Advanced
Volume-tiered maker and taker rates
None, because you trade the order book directly
Rate depends on your tier, and the full schedule is only visible after signing in
Data verified as of 31 August 2026 against Coinbase's official pricing and fees disclosure and its Coinbase One help page.
Two details in that table are worth reading twice.
The first is that Coinbase One's zero-fee benefit explicitly does not cover the 1% limit order execution fee.
That reverses the usual advice about using limit orders to save money, because on the simple screen a limit order is the expensive one.
The second is that the spread has no published number anywhere.
You can see it on the order preview before you confirm, and Coinbase says it may differ between similar transactions, but there is no schedule to check in advance.
If you take nothing else from this article, switching to Coinbase Advanced removes the spread and is free to try.

MEXC: our top pick for traders leaving over cost and coin access

The reason a $1,000 buy on Coinbase's simple screen can cost as much as $28.75 is not that Coinbase is expensive in some vague sense.
It is that three separate charges stack, and one of them has no published figure.
MEXC prices the same trade differently.
Its spot schedule publishes 0.0000% maker and a taker rate of 0.0000% to 0.0500%, with the major pairs at 0.0500% taker, and holding MX reduces spot fees by a further 20%.
The schedule is a public page: every listed pair has its own maker and taker row, across 207 pages of pairs, and no account is needed to read it.
The arithmetic on the same $1,000 buy is short.
A maker order costs nothing.
A taker order costs 50 cents, or 40 cents with MX deduction enabled.
Against up to $28.75 plus a spread, that is a gap of up to roughly $28 on a single trade.
Scale that to a habit rather than a trade.
Someone buying $500 twice a month on the simple Coinbase screen pays $120 a year in limit order fees alone, and up to $225 more in Coinbase fees, before the spread is counted at all.
Coinbase One does not fix it either, because the $29.99 monthly Preferred tier costs $359.88 a year and the 1% limit order fee survives the subscription.
The same twelve months of buying on MEXC as taker orders costs $6.00.

Our position on this

MEXC publishes this article, so read this section as a stated position rather than a neutral finding.
Our view is that a fee you cannot look up before you open an account is not a competitive fee, it is a quoted one.
Every exchange in this comparison can win a fee argument by naming its best VIP tier, which is why we built the comparison around what each platform publishes rather than what each platform claims.
That standard costs us points in places, and the sections below say so where it does.

The honest limits

MEXC is unavailable in the United States and the United Kingdom, and its EEA standing is covered further down.
It is a Seychelles-registered exchange rather than a licensed domestic venue, which is a real trade-off and not a footnote, and we cover what that means for asset protection in our guide to how MEXC secures user assets.
CoinGecko also scores MEXC at 9 out of 10 against Coinbase's 10, which we show in full further down rather than leaving out.
If you are outside the restricted regions and your reason for leaving is the number on the confirmation screen, this is the switch that changes it.

Coinbase alternatives compared

The dimensions below were chosen because they are the ones that actually decide this choice: what the rate is, whether you can see it before you sign up, whether a token discount changes it, and how an independent tracker scores the venue.

Where you can actually trade

Availability is the constraint that overrides every fee argument above.
Coinbase serves the United States, the United Kingdom and most of the European Economic Area, and its Coinbase One subscription is listed as available in 42 countries covering those markets plus Australia, Brazil, Canada, Singapore and Switzerland.
Most of the alternatives in this article serve a different map, and some of them will simply not open an account for you.

United States readers

If you are in the United States, Coinbase is often still the right answer, and this article is not going to pretend otherwise.
MEXC does not serve United States residents, so nothing above applies to you as a switching option.
The realistic domestic alternatives are Kraken, Gemini and Bitstamp, all of which operate under United States licensing and publish their fee schedules openly.
Before switching, the cheaper move is usually to test Coinbase Advanced first, since it removes the spread without moving your assets anywhere.

United Kingdom readers

MEXC does not serve United Kingdom residents either.
Treat this article as background reading on how the wider market prices spot trading, and check the Financial Conduct Authority register before opening an account anywhere.

European Economic Area readers

MEXC appears on the European Securities and Markets Authority register of entities identified as not compliant with EU rules, following a decision by the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets in September 2025.
MEXC is not an EU-licensed platform and nothing here should be read as suggesting otherwise.
MEXC holds no MiCA authorisation, and since the transition period ended on 1 July 2026, an exchange without that authorisation cannot serve EEA clients.
If you are in the EEA, your options are the platforms that appear on the ESMA register of authorised crypto-asset service providers, and none of the offshore venues in this article qualify.

The Rest of the Field: 7 Coinbase Alternatives Reviewed

Kraken

Benefits.
Kraken publishes its full fee schedule openly, holds licensing in several major markets including the United States and the United Kingdom, and is one of only a handful of venues CoinGecko scores at 10 out of 10.
Its July 2026 fee change now sets your tier by the best of spot volume, futures volume or assets held on the platform, which helps holders who trade infrequently.
Limitations.
The base-tier Pro rate of 0.250% maker and 0.400% taker is the highest of any alternative in this table.
Kraken's simple Instant Buy flow carries its own convenience charge plus a spread, which reproduces the exact problem people leave Coinbase over.
Listing breadth is closer to Coinbase's than to MEXC's.

Binance

Benefits.
A published 0.100% base rate that drops 25% when fees are paid in BNB, consistently high spot volumes on major pairs, and a product range spanning spot, derivatives, earn and launch products.
Limitations.
It does not serve United States residents, who are directed to a separate entity.
Its regulatory position varies significantly by country, which makes availability harder to predict than with a domestic venue.
Account and product access can differ between jurisdictions in ways the marketing does not make obvious.

OKX

Benefits.
The lowest published maker rate among the non-zero-fee venues at 0.080%, a 10 out of 10 Trust Score, and a strong derivatives and Web3 wallet stack alongside spot.
Limitations.
The maker advantage disappears if you mostly place market orders, since the taker rate matches the field at 0.100%.
The OKB discount stacks with volume tiers rather than applying flatly, so casual users see less of it than the headline suggests.
United States access is limited.

Bybit

Benefits.
Strong derivatives infrastructure, a published 0.100% spot base rate, and VIP tiers that fall steeply for active traders.
Limitations.
Spot came second to derivatives historically, and spot depth outside major pairs reflects that.
It exited Japan in 2026 after a staged wind-down, which is a reminder that regional availability moves.
No United States access.

Bitget

Benefits.
Copy trading is genuinely mature here rather than bolted on, the base rate matches the field at 0.100%, and BGB cuts up to 20% off.
Limitations.
Its own Japan operation is winding down through 2026, with new registrations already stopped.
Fee marketing quotes very low headline rates that apply to high tiers rather than new accounts.
No United States access.

KuCoin

Benefits.
839 listed coins against Coinbase's 403 on the same CoinGecko measure, built-in trading bots, and a KCS discount worth 20%.
Limitations.
Its Trust Score sits at 9 out of 10 rather than 10.
Liquidity on long-tail pairs is thinner than the coin count implies.
No United States access.

Gate

Benefits.
One of the longest listing tails in the industry, a 10 out of 10 Trust Score, and a published proof-of-reserves process.
Limitations.
Independent trackers currently disagree on whether the VIP 0 spot rate is 0.10% or 0.20%, which is a poor sign for a fee page.
The interface is harder for newcomers than anything else in this table.
It is unavailable in several major markets including the United States.

Best Coinbase alternatives by why you are leaving

If you are leaving over cost.

Try Coinbase Advanced first, because it is free and removes the spread.
If the tiered rate is still too high, MEXC publishes the lowest base-tier spot rate in this comparison at 0.0000% maker and 0.0500% taker.

If you are leaving over coin selection.

Coinbase Exchange lists 403 coins across 520 spot pairs on CoinGecko's count.
MEXC lists 1,633 coins across 2,018 pairs on the same count, and KuCoin lists 839 across 992.
One caution on that chart.
The 403 figure counts assets on Coinbase Exchange's order books, and the Coinbase app also routes trades to decentralised exchanges, so the number of things you can theoretically buy through the app is much larger than the number of things listed on its own venue.
If you are leaving because you want a licensed venue.
Kraken is the closest like-for-like swap, and Gemini and Bitstamp are the other United States options.
If you are leaving over account restrictions.
Moving platforms does not remove identity verification, and every venue in this table runs it.

Where Coinbase is still hard to beat

Coinbase is not a weak product, and a comparison that pretended otherwise would be useless.
It holds United States licensing that none of the offshore alternatives here can match, and as a publicly listed company it files audited financial disclosures that no private exchange in this table is obliged to produce.
CoinGecko ranks it first among all tracked exchanges with a Trust Score of 10 out of 10.
Its dollar banking rails are better than any alternative here, which matters enormously if your money starts and ends in a United States bank account.
The product range has also widened well beyond crypto spot.
Coinbase now offers commission-free stock trading, prediction markets, derivatives backed by its Deribit acquisition, and the Base layer-2 network, so the honest framing is that most alternatives replace one part of Coinbase rather than all of it.
Coinbase also states that it has no payment for order flow arrangements with market makers, which is a disclosure most venues do not make.

How to move your crypto off Coinbase in three steps

Step 1. Get the deposit address on the receiving platform.
Open your account on the new exchange, complete identity verification, then generate a deposit address for the exact asset and the exact network you plan to use.
Copy the memo or tag as well if the asset requires one.
Step 2. Send a small test amount.
Send the minimum first and wait for it to arrive.
This costs one extra network fee and prevents the two mistakes that lose funds permanently, which are choosing the wrong network and omitting a required memo.
Step 3. Send the rest.
Check the receiving platform's minimum deposit and the sending platform's withdrawal fee before you confirm, since Coinbase charges its own processing fee on some assets in addition to the network fee.
Our withdrawal walkthrough and the deposit and withdrawal support page cover the same checks in the other direction.

So which Coinbase alternative should you pick?

If you are in the United States or the United Kingdom, stay with Coinbase or move to Kraken, and switch to Coinbase Advanced before you do either.
If you are in the EEA, check the ESMA register first and treat everything offshore as a regulatory decision rather than a pricing one.
If you are outside those regions and you are leaving because a $1,000 buy can cost you up to $28.75 plus a spread you cannot see, MEXC is our top pick in this comparison: a published rate of 0.0000% maker and 0.0500% taker, a fee page you can read without an account, and roughly four times Coinbase Exchange's listed coins.
Our exchange fee comparison works through the same maths across more venues.
If you mostly place maker orders and want a 10 out of 10 Trust Score, OKX at 0.080% maker is the better fit.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best Coinbase alternatives in the USA?
Kraken, Gemini and Bitstamp all operate under United States licensing.
Most offshore exchanges, including MEXC, do not accept United States residents.

Which Coinbase alternative lists the most coins?
Of the venues checked here, MEXC lists 1,633 coins against Coinbase Exchange's 403 on CoinGecko's count as of 31 August 2026.

Is Coinbase Advanced cheaper than the Coinbase app?
Yes, because Coinbase Advanced includes no spread and trades the order book directly.
The full rate table is only visible after you sign in.

Can I transfer crypto directly from Coinbase to another exchange?
Yes, by withdrawing to a deposit address on the receiving platform.
Match the network exactly and include any required memo or tag.

Do Coinbase alternatives offer a wallet like Coinbase Wallet?
Most major exchanges offer a separate self-custody wallet app alongside the exchange account.
Those are a different product from the exchange comparison above.

Are Coinbase alternatives safe?
Safety varies by venue and jurisdiction rather than by brand.
Check licensing where you live, proof-of-reserves publication, and an independent score such as CoinGecko's Trust Score.

Does Coinbase One remove all trading fees?
No.
Coinbase states that the zero-fee benefit does not apply to the 1% limit order execution fee, and a spread still applies.

Risk and compliance note

Trading cryptocurrency carries risk of loss, and low-capitalisation tokens carry liquidity and volatility risk well above that of major assets.
Fee schedules, listing counts and regional availability change frequently, so confirm the current figures on each platform before acting on this comparison.
MEXC's User Agreement lists the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada among its prohibited jurisdictions, and MEXC holds no MiCA authorisation to serve clients in the European Economic Area.
