PANews reported on March 17 that Republican Senator Lindsey Graham wrote: "I just spoke with President Trump about how our European allies are unwilling to provide resources to keep the Strait of Hormuz open, which would be far more beneficial to Europe than the United States. I've never heard him so angry in my life. Given the gravity of the situation, I sympathize with him. It's outrageous that our allies arrogantly believe that Iran possessing nuclear weapons is irrelevant, and that preventing Iran from acquiring them is our military action, not theirs. The strategy of containing Iran's nuclear ambitions has proven to be a complete failure. Insufficient support in keeping the Strait of Hormuz open will have far-reaching consequences for both Europe and the United States. I have always considered myself a strong supporter of alliances, but faced with such a severe test, I can't help but question their value. I believe I'm not the only senator who shares this sentiment."
