MTN slashes fibre broadband prices in Ghana by nearly 230% after customer complaints

MTN Ghana has slashed subscription prices for Fibre, its Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband service, following public demand and government engagement for a price review. 

According to information posted on his social media page, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations (CDIT), Sam George, noted that the development reflects his recent discussions with MTN Ghana about an affordable pricing strategy.

It also forms part of the move to ensure affordable internet pricing and improved service delivery for Ghanaians.

The minister noted that the intervention came as a direct response to customer complaints. He also reiterated further commitments to engage with other service providers for a sustainable dialogue towards a fair pricing strategy. 

“I want to express my gratitude to the management and staff of MTN who have heeded our call for more affordable, stable and reliable fibre broadband. From the MoCDTI, we will continue to push for better service packages for the Ghanaian people. For God and Country,” the Minister added.

The development marks one of the most significant broadband price cuts in the history of Ghana’s telecom industry. It signifies how public complaints continue to be a leading voice in demand for change.

New prices for MTN Ghana fibre

Following the revised pricing structure, the one-month unlimited 100 Megabyte per second (Mbps) package, which previously cost GH¢987, was slashed to GH¢299, representing a 230% drop. 

Also, MTN Ghana’s Fibre broadband customers can access a 300 Mbps unlimited broadband package for GH¢444 per month, while a 500 Mbps unlimited package will now cost GH¢999.

The development is expected to be welcomed by households, businesses, remote workers, content creators and the country’s internet community at large, providing financial relief for groups who rely heavily on high-speed internet connectivity. It comes amid growing calls for affordable broadband service and quality network in the country. 

Launched in 2016, MTN Ghana has continued to expand its fibre broadband. The company significantly expanded its Fibre-to-the-Home customer base, which encompasses both fixed wireless access (FWA) and wireline fibre technologies.

Fueled by mobile data and investment in fibre broadband, average monthly data consumption per user across MTN’s coverage in Ghana rose to 12.5 GB in 2025, up from 10.8 GB the previous year.

MTN remains the dominant telecom player in Ghana, serving over 31 million subscribers (72.69%), while active data subscribers stood at 19.9 million at the end of 2025.

Fibre broadband pricing in Nigeria 

In Nigeria, the company’s fibre broadband, known as Fibre X, also offers unlimited monthly plans which start at ₦30,000 for 50Mbps. It also has 100 Mbps for ₦45,000/month and 200 Mbps for ₦70,000/month. 

Other monthly plans are the 300 Mbps ₦100,000 package and  1 Gbps for ₦200,000.

In terms of Nigeria’s fixed wired subscribers, MTN is the dominant leader after seeing over 658% increase in one year. 

As of March 2026, the customer base stood at 123,356, marking a 90% share of the market, which also includes players such as 21st Century, ipNX, ING Digital, Big Picture, and SWIFTNG.
